Peacock & Pineapple — Empowering Minds
For Every Reader
Who Was Told the
Wrong Story About
Themselves.
We build reading experiences, story subscriptions, and advocacy resources for the people the literary world forgot — adults, teens, and families who deserve more than "good enough."
"Every reader deserves a story that sees them — not as a diagnosis or a label or a reading level — but as a mature person who deserves good stories."
— M. Smith, Founder & CEO

The Gap We're Closing
You already feel this. You see it in your classroom. You worry about it at your
kitchen table. These numbers put a name to what you already know.
1 in 2
adults sitting next to you right now reads below a 6th-grade level
That's 130 million people — your students' parents, your neighbors, your congregation, your own family members. They are not struggling because they aren't smart. The books written for them were written for children.

What this means for your classroom
Think about every student in your class. There is a real chance that the adult or parent at home is reading at the same level — or below.
So outside classroom walls — who is helping your challenged readers to read?
1 in 5
IEP students who age out of school services at 22 have no accessible reading materials designed for their adult lives
For teachers: the transition cliff is real — and the literary world offers almost nothing on the other side of it.
28%
of U.S. adults score at the lowest literacy level — up from 19% in 2017
Nearly 1 in 3 adults — and the number is climbing every year.
Nearly 1 in 3 adults — and the number is climbing every year.
For parents: your child's reading struggles today can follow them into adulthood without the right support.
$ 2.2T
Adults who read below a 6th-grade level earn less, access fewer opportunities, and face greater health disparities
This is what low literacy costs the U.S. economy every year — in lost wages, reduced productivity, and preventable healthcare costs.

The Keeper
She preserves what the world forgets to hold.
She moves through the world quietly — through attic light and kitchen silence, through the spaces where things get set down and never picked back up. Old recipes. Unfinished letters. Birthday cards. Pressed flowers tucked between pages of a book no one has opened in thirty years.
She doesn't appear in every story. But when she does, something lost is about to be found.

"Some things are too important to lose. I make sure they aren't."

The Story Behind the Brand
She Was Born
Loving Books.
By the time she was a teenager, the world had taken that away from her. Every book available at her reading level was written for a small child — cartoons, short sentences, characters with nothing to do with her life. She was a young woman with a full emotional world. A personality. A dog she loved. A prom to go to. And the literary world had nothing for her.
I watched my daughter fall out of love with reading — and I knew it wasn't her fault. It wasn't a limitation. It was a gap. A gap so wide that millions of adults, teens, elderly readers, ESL learners, and people with developmental disabilities fall through it every single day.
So I decided to fill it. Peacock & Pineapple was born from that decision. Every product we build — every book, every letter, every advocacy resource — exists because someone I love deserved better, and I believed the world did too.
Other parents kept calling me for guidance. I had navigated IEP meetings, SSI applications, guardianship proceedings, transition planning — all without a clear roadmap. Instead of keeping that knowledge to myself, I built a platform to share it.

I've been looking for something like this for my entire career. My students deserve stories written for their lives — not their reading level alone. Peacock & Pineapple understands the difference.
